Our new Menomonee Valley branch!
The Urban Ecology Center and Menomonee Valley Partners are excited to announce another milestone in our joint partnership to revitalize the Menomonee Valley. Thanks to many funding partners, project partners and the recent multi-million dollar gift from the Burke Foundation, we are moving ahead with construction on the Urban Ecology Center Menomonee Valley branch!
A 100 year old tavern at 37th and Pierce will be rehabbed into a “green” environmental community center. Designed by Uihlein Wilson Architects and opening in the fall of 2012, the branch will open to serve eight schools and grow to serve 22 south side schools who are clamoring for our Neighborhood Environmental Education Project (learn more about that here). Like our buiding in Riverside Park, our Menomonee Valley branch will serve as a model of "green" building options. And of course we can't wait to have a space where we can get to know our neighbors!

Revitalizing Milwaukee's crossroad
At the heart of the Urban Ecology Center you'll always find a community striving for change. Our branches are the results of partnerships with organizations, neighbors and businesses that have a vested interest in seeing their area grow and thrive. Whether the issue is safety, preservation, education or just neighbors connecting to each other -- working with people with this much energy is hard to resist.
For this branch we have formed a unique partnership with the Menomonee Valley Partners, a nonprofit whose vision is to redevelop the Menomonee Valley into a strong ecological, economic and cultural area in the city. Together we have created a joint project — Menomonee Valley - From The Ground Up. Our new branch is only a part of this $26 million project that includes:
- The transformation of 24 acres of wasteland into a freshly planted outdoor learning area
- Doubling of the Hank Aaron State Trail with construction of a six-mile western extension
- Vastly improved pedestrian/ bike access into the valley
To make this happen, our two organizations are working closely with the state, city, and county governments, surrounding neighborhood associations, a number of the Valley businesses, the Forest County Potawatomi, Friends of Hank Aaron State Trail, and more. Energizing, isn't it?
Menomonee Valley Project Donors Thank you to the following corporations, organizations, individuals, and government departments and programs for making a gift or pledge to support this amazing project. |
