Hosted by the Urban Ecology Center branches, these free community events are your ticket to discovering urban green spaces while learning outdoor recreation skills.

Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned outdoor enthusiast, our experienced UEC guides will ensure you have a fantastic time. Plus, it's a great opportunity to meet fellow adventurers from your community.

Fall 2026
Canoeing
Whether you're brand new to paddling or looking to build confidence on the water, this welcoming experience is a great place to start. No prior canoeing experience is necessary, just bring your curiosity and sense of adventure!
This program is open to ages 5 and up. Canoes hold up to three people, with the third participant seated in the center. Solo participants may be paired with a canoe partner on site. Participants under 10 must have an adult in the boat with them.
Orienteering & Trail Navigation Names
Want to build your internal GPS? Try orienteering and trail navigation at the Menomonee Valley Urban Ecology Center between 10am - 1:30pm. Discover the basics of orienteering and navigation through fun, hands-on activities! Participants will learn how to use a compass, take on a bearing challenge, and practice their skills on an orienteering quest.
Winter 2027
Cross Country Skiing & Sledding
Let’s glide through the snow at the Riverside Park Urban Ecology Center between 10am - 1:30pm. This is a fun introduction to cross country skiing at the UEC and learning the basics of traversing through a snowy landscape. Program facilitators will assist with ski sizing, balancing and gliding, and even cover how to get up if you tumble!
All levels of experience are welcome. We will also have a sledding hill and plenty of fun in the snow!
Snowshoeing
Channel your inner Abominable Snowman at the Menomonee Valley Urban Ecology Center between 10am - 1:30pm for a fun introduction to snowshoeing! Step into snowshoes at the UEC and learn the basics of stomping through a snowy landscape. Program facilitators will assist with snowshoe sizing, mechanics, and even cover how to get up if you tumble!
All levels of experience are welcome. All participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Summer 2027
Fishing
Dress for the weather, pack a snack, and bring your family/friends for this unique opportunity to connect with people and nature in the city! The UEC will provide all the gear necessary to participants who wish to prepare for a campout this season. Let's cover the essentials and address your burning camping questions to prepare you for a successful overnight journey in the great outdoors! Children must be accompanied by an adult, and all are invited to participate.
Camping Essentials & Campfire Cooking
Dress for the weather, pack a snack, and bring your family/friends for this unique opportunity to connect with people and nature in the city! The UEC will provide all the gear necessary to participants who wish to prepare for a campout this season. Kayaking
Learn a new skill or share your passion with others in a supportive and welcoming environment. Discover the joy of gliding across the water, surrounded by the stunning sights and sounds of nature. No experience necessary, just bring your sense of adventure and let's paddle together!
What to Expect
Prepare for a day of fun! Wear sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing, and don't forget to bring along a refillable water bottle and some snacks. Our UEC buildings will be open for your convenience, providing a place to rest and recharge between activities.
